Hello from Canada!!!!!
My name is Karen Lonsway and I am one of the organizers for Battle of the Books WEST for the York Region District School Board.
Battle of the Books is a game-style competition designed to promote reading among students in Grades 4, 5, and 6. A committee is comprised of teacher-librarians, Richmond Hill and Vaughan public librarians and teachers and a 25 book list is generated. Students are encouraged to read as many books and to keep track of details from the book.
Each participating school selects a team of 7 students. The team is made up of two: Grade 4s, two Grade 5s and two Grade 6s and one substitute. With school closures, many of the schools who signed up for Battle of the Books had students sign up but were unable to make teams. At my school, there were over 30 students sign up for the reading program. Many of the students read 20+ books hoping to make the Battle of the Books team!
The organizing committee would like to prepare a slide deck (power point) presentation to send out to the students. It is one way we can connect with our students during these uncertain times. The presentation will highlight books that were part of the program, questions, a reading survey and students will receive a certificate.
I am contacting you because your book Ungifted is on the 25 book list. If it is possible, could you send a short video/photo/message congratulating the students for participating in the reading program and encouraging them to keep reading. This short video/photo/message will be embedded into the slide deck (power point) presentation. I would ask that you send the clip by Thursday, May 14th.
Thanking you in advance for your support with this project!
