Hi, Jonathon,
Thanks for posting and for bringing back happy memories of my first book!
Your question: I handed in what I considered the perfect manuscript. The publishing company bought it from me and first requested a small rewrite. I thought it was terrible, but I did it. They were right. It improved the book a lot. After that, editing, cover art, interior illustrations, printing, and publishing was all done by the publisher. After the rewrite, I never saw the book until it was published and ready for the bookshelves.
My book was a bestseller from the start. The interest in it was probably largely because I was a curiosity — an author at the tender age of 12. Whatever did it, I had a hit on my hands pretty much right away, most of it through sales to schools and on the book club sheets.
OK? Thanks for your interest. If there’s anything else, you know where to find me — right here.
