Quick question

I was thinking back to the ending of Criminal Destiny where Dr. Bruder comes at Malik with a syringe full of sedative. Was the point to sedate him or kill him?  Because Eli could have been right and the sedative could have been a ‘dose makes the poison’ kind of thing. If it was that would imply that Dr. Bruder was fully ready to kill his son… So, was it meant to sedate or was it something else that just happened to also sedate?
