Did the serenity parents get to choose?

As the title says, I wonder, how did each kid end up with each Serenity parent? Did they choose? Was it random. Did Dr. Hammerstrom assign who would get which clone? Like, did they consider which scientist would be the most patient to the clones’ theoretical negative traits when assigning kids?
