I think it would be very believable. You would not need to use the words Democrat or Republican because the focus would be on the boy’s relationship with his father and how he resolves it as part of growing up. The family could live in DC prior to the father becoming president, the girl could be a fellow student at the school attended by the boy, the undocumented friend could be the son of live-in help at the girl’s parents home, i.e. they would be cast as liberals who knowingly hired an undocumented worker, provided housing to he and her son and even arranged for and paid for her son to attend the same private school as their daughter and the first son to be.

In view of today’s political situation I think a story like this would be very credible as well as highly interesting.

I’m not sure how it would end but if I was writing it the boy would find a way to partially reconcile with his father while still supporting and protecting his two best friends.
