I wrote “Jake” to see if I could, to see if it would translate to my (at the time) Y/A audience.

Agreed — life is beautiful. But I couldn’t give THE GREAT GATSBY a happy ending, now, could I?

The result? Adults liked it a lot; kids, meaning my reguar audience, not so much.
