Hi, An,
Everything has to be about something, right?
Yes, it’s intentional. I think it’s everybody’s “formula.” It’s the event, or incident, that creates the story. e.g. In SLUGFEST, the main character runs afoul of a new school rule and, through no fault of hios own, has to go to summer school. It’s a technique, and it’s not. As I said before, every story has to be about something. It’s up to the author to make that something interesting.
I don’t think any particular thing drew me to this type of writing, other than a desire to tell a story with a certain amount of action and/or tension.
