    Mrs. Cox's 5th grade Students

A group of us just finished reading Unplugged and The Fort and loved them and are hungry for more of your books. We are wondering how you come up with your ideas to write novels and how you plan the story. Do you plan your plot twists before you start writing, or do you figure them as you go? Can you make sequels for The Fort and Unplugged?

    Sincerely,

An, Gianna, Luis, Barack, Bryan, Adam, Emanuel, Marissa and Raymond

Hi. Mrs. Fox & 5th Grade,

Thanks for posting. I'm pleasedto hear that some of my books are making a hit in your classroom! Thanks for writing to tell me so.

Your question: My stories are well-planned before I put a single word down. I have to be writing toward my ending in order to stay on topic and make sense. That's a rule I tell all writing students: you can't say anything properly unless you know exactly what you're trying to say. And you can's know that unless you plan. Sure, I can make changes, even add and subtract people if it suits the story. But the basic plan has to be there before I start.

As for sequels, I haven't planned any for the books you mentioned, but I also wouldn't rule them out. Will you accept an indefinite maybe?

    Thanks again, people!                                                 -----Gordon Korman-----

Thank you for responding back to us, but could you please make a part 2 sequel to The Fort. We are curious if the kids found another fort. We also wonder what happened to the fort and Jaegar.. We really want to see a movie about The Fort like they did with Holes

We have been working on writing a plan before our own stories in class and learned from your response here. Thank you so much, and if you are ever in Garden Grove, CA we'd love to meet you in our school.

    Sincerely,

An, Gianna, Luis, Barack, Bryan, Emanuel, Marissa, and Raymond

Hi, Mrs. Cox & An, Gianna, Luis, Barack, Bryan, Emanuel, Marissa & Raymond,

Hmmm. I don't think the kids will find another fort -- at least, not like this one! This fort was deemed a danger by the city government, and was destroyed and buried in the last chapter of the book. That's how so much of the contents got to the town dump.  I think Jaeger will have to face punishment, which he deserves. And I agree -- I think THE FORT would make an amazing movie.  Let's hope a film company comes along and reads the book and thinks so too!
