    Kayden Crume

    From my 6th grade student:

Hi, my name is Kayden Crume. I am a 6th grader at Spillane Middle School. I am writing a fan letter because your book "Schooled" is amazing! I love all the characters and their qualities. I think you did a really good job on this book. I have a few questions for you. Number one: What inspired you to write this book? Also, have you ever thought of making a sequel for "Schooled?" I hope you are able to write back.

    Hi. Kayden,

Thanks for posting. I'm pleased to hear that SCHOOLED went over so well with you. I've written a lot of books -- would you believe the one I'm working on now is #108? -- so I hope you'll plan to read on.

Your question: What you call "inspiration" has more to do with just having something to say. Writing that kind of story is what I do for a living. My ideas come from plain old hard work, and a lot of thinking and plotting. No big mystery; it's just work.

Thanks again for writing, Kayden.                                                         -----Gordon Korman-----

    Dear Gordon Korman,

My name is Jayden Sauve, and I am a student at Pine Grove Middle School. I'm writing to you to thank you for writing the book “Schooled”. We’ve just finished reading the book in class, and I wanted to write to you to share my thoughts and ask some questions about the book.

First off, I really liked how Naomi’s attitude towards Cap changed throughout the story. It really added emotion to the story and started the “Hippie Bandwagon”. I also liked one theme of the book, to accept everyone, even if they’re a little different from everyone else. To add on,I  really liked the part where Cap showed everyone how to tie die. It started the turning point in the story, which added different perspectives of Cap. Speaking of perspectives, my favorite thing about Schooled was the different points of view each chapter. It’s one of the main reasons I liked this book. Another thing I have wondered is if Mr. Kasigi got the job at North High. He probably didn’t, but you never know. To finish off, I really liked the overall idea of the story. Having a kid who was basically raised in the 60’s come to modern day society and change people’s lives is a great story in my opinion.

There are also some questions I have. My first question I have is about Naomi. How come she was the character to feel bad and have empathy for Cap? How come not Lena or someone else? Another question I have about Naomi is did she actually like Cap? After the $1000 check, she told him “to be continued”, so what ever happened after Cap went back to school? I have also been wondering about Hugh. After Cap came back to school, did Cap still talk with Hugh? Or has Hugh not forgiven Cap, and is still mad at him? Another question of mine is did Mrs. Donnelly and Rain become friends? Rain took her advice and moved out of Garland, but was that the last time they would talk? I also have wondered if Mr. Kasigi got the job at North High. He probably didn’t, but you never know. Lastly, what ever happened to Zach? Are Hugh and him still friends? Thank you for taking the time to read my questions and my thoughts.

                                         Sincerely, Jayden

    Hi, Jayden,

Thanks for posting. I\'m pleased to hear that SCHOOLED made such an impression on you. It\'s a very popular book, so you have lots of company -- there are plenty of Cap Anderson fans!

Your questions are another matter. The whole book is fiction, so the questions are all whatever you want the answers to be. For instance, the character of Naomi would suggest that she would have the sensitivity to feel for another person, whereas Lena and the others were more self-centered. Did she like Cap? \"To be continued\" suggests that they have a future - probably. Would Cap talk to Hugh? From what we know about Cap, he would never hold a grudge, right? And Rain was a sort of mother figure when Mrs. Donnelly was growing up. They may be cordial to one another, but friends? I don\'t think so. And Mr. Kasigi? I\'m going to give him the new job. Why not?

That\'s the beauty of a book that doesn\'t exist -- the answers to your questions can be anything you want them to be. Everything that is, except real.

Thanks again for writing.                                                                        -----Gordon Korman-----
