[Casper Classical Academy 6th Grade Book Club: The Book Dragons]

Good morning,

As a 6th grade lunch hour book club choice, we decided to read your novel, Unplugged, which has been nominated for our state's Indian Paintbrush award.  We have to say that the story line had some excellent plot twists.  In addition, we feel that you represent the lives of middle school kids very well.  We do have some questions for you:

What made you choose the idea of eliminating technology in this novel?  We think that we might be able to live without technology for the summer if we had a ton of books, but we could definitely not live without meat.

Also, what book are you most proud of writing?

Thanks for posting.I'm pleased to hear that UNPLUGGED went over well with the Dragons. I hope you'll all want to go on to read many more of my books. There are now 105 of them (104 + UNPLUGGED, that is!) so you won't be running out of reading material any time soon. Newest: OLD SCHOOL, just a few days in publication.

Your question: Living without technology on a simple plant-based diet is the way some of these health spas operate. So help me, I didn't make it up. It's real, including giving up TV and phones and anything else 21st century. It's definitely not for me, not even for a summer, but it exists. Add it to the list of "Things to Avoid!" if you're like me -- I couldn't live without my phone!

I'm proud of most of my work, but I'm especially proud of a 3-book series called MASTERMINDS, and my 100th book, titled THE FORT.

I selected this novel for my reading group... 15 Third graders that are strong readers!  We began our school year reading an old publication, Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire, and they begged for another book by Mr. Korman.  I researched and selected Unplugged for several reasons: Arkansas (we are in Arkansas), Technology (it was nice to find a current book where they didn't have to learn about old technology no longer in use), and the subject of Friendship.  From the very beginning we dove into the characters, made predictions, and were so excited to see the predictions come true!  as we read the first "big reveal" at the end my class literally CHEERED!  Thank you Gordan Korman for writing a book that my students begged to read everyday!

Thanks for posting, #1 Fan! I'm glad UNPLUGGED left you wanting more. Actually, there probably won't be more. UNPLUGGED is what the industry calls a stand-alone book, one where the story is told and no further information is forthcoming. So I can't say there will never be more, but right now it doesn't look promising. Sorry.

I hope you'll want to go on to many more of my books. There are 105 of them as of now, so you won't be running out of reading material any time soon!

Thanks for posting. I'm glad everyone wants more of Jett & Company, but I think UNPLUGGED has told the whole story. I don't think there's another tale to be told there, unless it's the life and times of Needles g owing into a big bad gator! So I won't say absolutely not, but it doesn't look like there will be more. Sorry.

Thanks for your kind letter! I'm pleased to hear that UNPLUGGED went over so well with your students. I'm now bursting with curiosity to know if they recognized Needles as a baby alligator right from the start! I had a class from Florida telling me  that they knew all among, but it didn't spoil the story for them. Great kids!

Thanks for writing. You and Knox will have to work it out over the "biggest fan" title. Meanwhile, I'm glad both of you enjoyed UNPLUGGED so much that you're demanding  sequels! Actually, you're probably not going to see any sequels at all. The story really is over and done with, and Needles is downriver and growing fast! I'm pretty sure UNPLUGGED is a 1-shot deal. Sorry to disappoint you. But I have a lot of books on my long (105 titles) list. I hope you'll read on.

I don't think there's going to be even a Book #2 for UNPLUGGED. That's one story that is told and done. The kids will all go back  to their various homes, maybe write an email or two to each other, and then get on with their lives. Even Needles is getting on with his life, right? But I hope UNPLUGED has made you interested in whatever else I've written. There are 105 books on my list, so you've got a lot of choice. I hope you'll enjoy more of my work.

Thanks for posting -- I got your second posting, too. I'm pleased to see that UNPLUGGED made such a great impression on you. And yes, Jett is more than a bit of a smart Alec -- he's opinionated and spoiled, and always gets his way, but he's basically a good honest kid -- you just have to search for the good in him.

I write for an audience, and that audience is definitely you -- I appreciate your enthusiasm for the way the story unfolded.

Thanks for posting. I'm glad UNPLUGED made a hit with you. I agree -- it would make an amazing movie, although that wouldn't be part of what I do. Film companies make movies, and I write books. Movie companies buy the rights to books, and then make movies, so there's hope that someone will notice UNPLUGGED and hire a baby alligator for the starring role! (And a great kid to play Jett!) Let's keep a good thought, and maybe the right film company will come along.
