Chelsie TroutmanDear Mr. Korman,
Greetings from Wyoming! We read Unplugged for our summer book club. We loved it! What inspired you to write Unplugged? Will there be a sequel? Our favorite character was Needles, and we wanted to read more about his life in the future. In the book, the summer camp doesn’t allow technology or meat. Would you be able to survive the summer camp? Our group is split on if they can survive without technology. They would survive by reading lots and lots of books. Some of our members don’t eat meat, so that wouldn’t be a problem.
How do you start to write a book. Do you start at the beginning, or the end? Where do your ideas come from? How many drafts does each book go through before it is published?
One of our book club members has a request. Will you please write a book about a cat with razor sharp claws, like Needles had super sharp teeth. That would be fabulous.
Thank you for writing such great middle school books,

Thanks for posting. I'm very pleased to hear that UNPLUGGED made a hit with the group. I'll try to get to all your questions.
You start to write a book by planning it out completely before you put down a single word. That way, you always know what you're trying to say. You start at the beginning and work your way towards your planned ending. My ideas come from plain old hard work, and a lot of thinking and plotting. No big mystery; it's just work. Each book has 2 drafts -- the one I start with, and the rewrite. By then, it's usually ready for editing by the publisher. And I believe I could survive camp without meat, but I would REALLY miss technology! For one thing, I write on a computer.
A cat with sharp claws? Maybe one day. I do enjoy writing about animals as incidental characters, not main ones.
Thanks again, Club Members. I hope you'll go on to read many more of my books.
Kindest regards, -----Gordon Korman-----
