Do you consider them so similar? One is a hippie raised in complete isolation as though this was the 1960s; the other is a modern kid who is raised among elderly people until he has almost become one of them. To me, they were two completely different people with different backgrounds. The similarity was strictly that, by the end of the books, both had become part of today and now. It was easier for Dexter because he had lived in a modern community. Cap took a little longer because he had to evolve through several generations to hit the 21st century.
You didn't say whether you enjoyed one of the books. Or, I hope, both of them.
