Hello Mr. Korman,

My name is R.J., and I've been reading your books for a long time since my dad was a huge fan of yours when he was a kid! I’ve enjoyed the Ungifted series, especially the first two books—the last one felt a bit different for me personally, but I still love the characters you've created. I had a question about the timeline that I hoped you might be able to explain. In Ungifted (published in 2012), Donovan and Noah are in 7th grade and around 12 years old. In Supergifted (2017), they’re in 8th grade at about 13. In Hypergifted, they start high school still at age 13.

If I follow the characters’ ages and grades literally, only about two school years pass in the story world. But because the books were published several years apart, the real-world dates would place their high school year around 2014. That’s where I got a little confused, because Hypergifted includes a very advanced AI system that is able to accurately generate videos—technology only developed considerably well in the mid‑2020s than from 2014.

I’m not criticizing at all; I’m just curious how you think about the series’ timeline.

Thanks for posting. I'm glad to note that you're a second generation fan.

Re: the timeline. I don't think about it at all. e.g. the HYPERGIFTED Donovan and Noah are only a graduation away from the Donovan and Noah in SUPERGIFTED, and they come right after the UNGIFTED pair. I admit that it's an oversight, and you caught me!

So do you use a floating timeline, like Rick Riordan? Like, Ungifted simply happened 2 years before Hypergifted, rather than in a specific year?

I suppose you could call it that. Don't forget SUPERGIFTED, whch could have taken place earlier in this same year, before the graduation. I try to keep it in order, in general, but timelines can be so easily run together, or faked. --GK--
