    Dear Gordon Korman,

Hi I am Ari from an elementary school in Wayzata and I’m 5th grade.  I like playing baseball, video games and I like reading your books.  I have read your book “Restart” and I think it is one of the best books I have ever read.  I think you are a great author with a great imagination.  I read “Restart” as a book for a book club in my class.  I really liked how you made it so interesting and how you make lots of fascinating characters.  I have also read your book “Schooled” and our teacher read “Snoop” to our class.  I would recommend your books to all of my friends and you are very inspiring.  I love how you made some mysteries like the mystery of Mr Solway’s medal and how Chase found it.  I have some questions for your book “Resart”.

    QUESTIONS

    • How long did it take you to make your book?
    • Did someone inspire you to make the book Restart?
    • How many words are in your book?
    • Are you gonna make book 2?
    • When did you start making your book?
    • Did anyone help you make your book?
    • What is your favorite book you have made? Is it Restart?

Thank you for reading my letter.  I would greatly appreciate a response.

    Sincerely,

    Ari

    Hi, Ari,

Thanks for posting. I'm glad to hear that you enjoy my books and that RESTART made such a big hit with you.

    Your questions:

How long? My fastest book took only 5 weeks, and my slowest took a whole year.

The only inspiration to write RESTART came from me. It's what I do for a living, and it involves a lot of thinking ad plotting. No big mystery; it's just work.

    How many words? 59,501. I didn't count them; that's the computer's count.

A sequel? I haven't planned one, but I won't rule it out. So what I'm giving you is "an indefinite maybe." Sorry, but that's the best I can promise at the moment.

I started writing it back in 2015, and it came out in hardcover edition in 2017.

    No helpers. I write alone.

I honestly have no favorites among my books, but I'm usually the most "into" the more recent reeases. So I guess my current "favorite" is HYPERGIFTED, which came out last month. And I admit to being very proud of the MASTERMINDS trilogy and of THE FORT, which was my 100th book.

OK? If there's anything else, you know where to find me -- right here!

                                                      Best regards,                                                          -----Gordon Korman-----

    Hi Gord,

You mentioned previously that Who Is Bugs Potter? was the quickest write at five weeks but I don't recall if you mentioned the book that took you a year.

    Hi,Darren,

It was LOSING JOE'S PLACE, which was the first time I'd ever attempted first person narrative. It took forever to get going, and twice forever to keep it going! (I thinkI've got it now.)                                                                                -Gord

Interesting to ruminate on the amount of time and work put in and the end results in comparing the two works.

I think they're both top quality books. Joe's might be better written but I prefer Bugs for some personal reasons plus I think it is a little more humorous. Rootbeer Racinette is still one of the best-ever character names though.
