My name is Brody and I am an aspiring student fan of your books. I have taken inspiration from your work, as well other novels and taken the act to write a fantasy novel about a teen that discovers he has a hidden connection to another world of mythology, magic, and wonder. He tries to juggle sports, friendship, and his new life in a struggle he must overcome.

one of the thinks I admire most of your work is your ability to captivate audiences and portray events and feelings. You recently signed the book sleepless for my mother at the Texas Librarians Association and I am obsessed. Your incredible description of characters like Mickey Prima or Cam Boxer.

As a young author I struggle with describing my characters feelings and thoughts, as well as overall description of things. I was wondering if you had any advice for these elements of literature and using words to my best ability to write.

Thanks for posting. It's always great to hear from a young fellow-writer, since I was one of those a long time ago! Your story sounds well thought-out. Enjoy it as you bring it to life.

The best way to enhance your character's thoughts and feelings is to put yourself into the character and "be" him for a while. It helps you understand what he's feeling, and even the background in his life that brought him to the decisions he's making now. It usually works for me, and it certainly can't hurt to get close to the people you write about.

Very best of luck in your writing projects, Brody. And say hi to your Mom. I visit Texas a lot, and will probably meet her again on the circuit.

You're on your own there, Tim. I have no idea how old you are, what your level of education is, and what interests you. Write something that you yourself are interested in, that amuses you, and your narrative will flow naturally. Plan a story first, and write a detailed outline of what happens in the story, what it leads up to, who the characters are to carry the story along, and the final outcome. Planning is everything -- that's my #1 rule.
