    As a 15 year veteran middle school teacher, UNTEACHABLES touched my heart and made me reconsider my own teaching methods. Thank you for this humorous, endearing story — it has made a difference for  this teacher!

    I recently finished reading The Unteachables along with a group of 6th grade teachers who are considering it to start the year.  As you know, we have all been through some challenging times and a little humor might be just the thing.  I have also read your article in The Reading Teacher and found it helpful in terms of understanding you better as an author.  I am wondering (and hoping) that you might suggest some thoughts on how teachers could use or have used this book with their students.  For example, how might teachers introduce the book's title?  I believe that your insights could be helpful as we work together to support our readers who will be coming through our doors from many different circumstances.  Your humor and cast of characters could be just the right elixir for this time.

    As an experienced teacher, you probably have better ideas than anything I could come up with, but I can tell you my original thinking when I developed the story: Adults and kids - more specifically, teachers and their students - have much more in common than they believe. This led me to the premise: What if a class of kids with terrible attitudes end up with a burnt-out teacher whose attitude is even worth than theirs? Would bad class plus bad teacher equal instant train wreck? Or, by some reverse math, could each turn out to be exactly what the other needed?

    I wanted to take a minute to tell you how much we've loved your books in general, but especially the Unteachables! My son loved your books, and when his 9 year old sister really started reading chapter books, he couldn't wait to introduce her to your work. Her favorite of your books has been this one. She loved the Unteachables so much that she begged me to let her read ME a chapter every night. Recently it left me emotional, overwhelmed with gratitude.  It's been a gift as a mom to have my children love literature, and to have this literature connect us as a family. Thank you for using your gift to bring joy to our home.
