Restart

Dear Gordon,

I am a principal and have been teaching elementary school for 23 years. One of my favorite ways to implement a safe learning community is by reading your books to my class. I have just finished reading Restart to my 4th, 5th, and 6th graders. This is the fourth time I have read it to a class and I like it more and more each time I read it.

The reason for my message is that my class has completed a project that combined their feelings brought to the surface after completing the book, and a song written by the artist, Aloe Blacc, called Free. The class drew images that the song made them think about from the book. It became quite an emotional project and I am so happy with the outcome! I wanted to share with you their project so you can see what amazing thoughts your book brought up and allowed for some amazing discussions. Thank you for being an amazing author and writing such relevant and relatable stories.

It took about 6 or 7 months to complete SLACKER, and probably another few weeks for a short rewrite. I write multiple genres, but basically Middle Grade novels. My first book was called THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING AT MCDONALD HALL. Most authors don't require what you call "inspiration," Danah. We write because we have something we want to say, a story to tell. That's all it takes to start us scribbling. My bestselling book is a middle grade novel called RESTART. Sorry, but I'm not a cryer, at least not in my reading. My favorite author is an American novelist named Kurt Vonnegut. I was 12 when I started to write, so I guess if I went back in time, I wouldn't have much advice to give my younger self, right?
