    1. What was your favorite book to write?

    2. What is your most popular book?

    3. What was your favorite book that you wrote?

    4. Did anyone inspire you for any of your books?

    Hi, Briggs, Jackson, & Charles,

Thanks for posting. I'll try to answer all your questions:

    1. I really do enjoy them all, but I think the SWINDLE series was the most fun.

    2. My most popular books, by sales, are ONE FALSE NOTE (#2 in The 39 Clues series) and RESTART.

    3. My favorites vary, mostly because I'm the most excited about the newer ones. I have a book coming out in January called THE SUPERTEACHER PROJECT. That, right now, is my favorite. Next, in the future, will be something called MIX-UP. See how it goes?

    4. I've been inspired by a lot of different people -- teachers, friends, my Mom and Dad -- but my books are basically my own.

I hope that covers what you wanted to know, people. If there's anything else, you know where to find me -- right here!

                                          Best regards,                                                            -----Gordon Korman-----

    Dear Gordan Korman,

I am in middle school and want to write a novel on my own. I want to know how to develop a plot and characters. I also want to know how to stretch out my story. I am sorry this is so short, I have to go to lunch in five minutes.

    Hi, Quinn,

Wow. It's not quite as easy as that. It's a long process of planning out the story you want to tell and the people you're going to use in order to tell it. You don't "stretch out" your story. It has to be complex enough to be long enough to qualify as book-length.

My advice: develop an idea for a story, making plenty of notes. Add complications in reaching the goal of the characters. Cast the parts as if you were casting a movie. Name everyone so that they become real people to you, or almost real. The best way to do this is to choose a book you really enjoyed reading and make notes on it, taking it apart, following what the characters did, how they faced adversity, or gave up, or did something brave, or even dishonest. Analyze someone else's book, and that may help you see how writing  novel is done.

Good luck! I hope to be writing you a fan letter one day!                                      -----Gordon Korman-----
