    Kirra

    Dear Gordon Korman,

Hi my name is Kirra.  I am 9 years old and live in Missouri.  I really like your books especially Slacker.  I have five questions for you to answer.

    1.  How do you come up with your book ideas?

    2.  Why do you put the lines in the middle of the page?

    3.  Why did you start writing books?

    4.  What was your first book you ever sold for money?

    5.  How did you find your style of writing?

I really like Slacker because that kind of relates to my family.  Another reason I really like Slacker is because I can easily get hooked in and can make a picture in my head.

    From, Kirra

    Hi, Kirra,

Thanks for posting. I'll be happy to answer your questions.

    1. My story ideas come from plain old hard work and a lot of thinking and planning. No big mystery; it's just work.

    2. Lines and pages are the work of the publisher. I don't have anything to do with putting the book together.

    3. I started writing when I was 12, in 7th grade, in answer to an English project. We were supposed to write a "novel," which meant a story that didn't end after a couple of pages. I started to write, and got carried away with my story -- it ended up over 100 pages! I've been at it ever since!

    4. The first book I ever sold for money was THIS CAN'T BE HAPPENING AT MACDONALD HALL, which was the English project I told you about in the 3rd question.

    5. REALLY smart question, Kirra! Style is probably there from the start, and develops in various ways during the lifetime of a writer. It's kind of hard to explain, but if you read my first book, and then go on to my 100th book, THE FORT, written 40+ years later. you'll be able to see a little bit of what I mean. My very first style points are still there, but they've taken off in several different directions at the same time.

OK? I hope that covers everything you asked about. If you need anything else, you know where to find me -- right here!

                                  Thanks again.                                                                    -----Gordon Korman-----
