Yes, in the dawn of antiquity, I used to be one of those.
The answer to your questions lie with the age of the boy. When they're 12 and under, they're just kids, which means they think exactly like most girls. And when they get older, they divide into 2 distinct groups -- the ones who think only about sports and the ones who think only about girls.
People have told me that my girls tend to be tomboys. That's partly because they're 12-ish, and partly because I don't happen to be girl who knows for sure. I write about boys because you, correctly, pointed out that I am one, albeit an overgrown one.
When you're writing, you're writing about people. Boys are people too, and people fit into people stories. Keep that in mind and you'll do fine. ---GK---
