I read your books in … 1995 or so.  Now my son is ready to read your books and I am nervous to give him “I want to go home,” because I remember being so enamoured by how effortless everything was for the main character — and things are so hard for my son.  I will give him that, McDonald Hall, and Zucchini Warriors to start (for his 8th birthday) since I recall those being my favourite.  I will be requesting our library purchase them, as these CLASSICS are not owned by the entire library system in our city of 150k people.  Shocking!  And in Canada, no less.  We will get “The Mad Scientist Club” and “The Great Brain” series based on your recommendation in an interview.

Do you have other recommendations of what to read?  We will obviously read YOUR books!  But, I am curious whether you have other recommendations in the vein of your writing — the kind of books with adventure and heart that make you just feel great to read them.  We love “The Wishing Chair” Enid Blyton books and Tolkien’s Hobbit.  We are interested in older classics.  Even if you know of a list to link to we would so appreciate it!

Thanks for posting. I'm pleased to hear that you've chosen some of my books for your son. You're starting with the right material for an 8-year-old, and I hope he'll enjoy the newer ones as well. The count is up to (can you believe it?) 101 titles with the recent release of THE SUPERTEACHER PROJECT.

I'm not sure he's old enough for the old Encyclopedia Brown series. They're short junior detective stories, and I loved them. And when he's about 10, make sure he gets THE HITCHHIKERS GUIDE TO THE GALAXY.

And I hope his life gets less hard, and the love of a good Mom smooths the way for him just a little.

Fantastic recommendations of other books. Encyclopedia Brown is a great series. I'm currently re-reading the Hitchhiker's series because, well, they're amazing and worth the time. My thought is that the age consideration maybe should be bumped up a bit as there is profanity and, to put it euphemistically, adult situations. Maybe more 14-15 years old?

Your reading habits suggest that you and I are very much alike! LOVED all the Hitchhikers books! And I read Encyclopedia Brown because the stories were short, and I was no reader at ages 10 and 11. It was at 12 that I moved on to Vonnegut and started writing my own stuff.

Thank you for the reply. While I've been a long time reader of yours, I've only recently checked out your forums, hence this recent reply to an older post. I hadn't meant to introduce myself here by these comments, but I thought a little more information needed to be made available about the HHGTTG series for Janice for her decision. I had a much longer initial comment in mind for my first foray on to your board (which I will still create in the near future) and it's still percolating in the noggin'. From some of your posts I've read, we do have some things we like in common, which I'll get into on that.

After I finish my Adams reading, I plan on re-reading your books including a bunch that are new to me. I'm looking forward to it.
