do you plan out your books or do you just write once you have a good mental picture of the story

For example, did you spend a lot of time planning out The Fort or did you just write it

Planning is everything. Before I put down a single word, I plan characters and plot, and even ending, so that I'm always writing "towards" something specific. For me, there can be no writing without planning.

The regular way -- find out eveything about me and my work, and write it down. That's different from fiction, of course, so the planning isn't the same. But knowing everything is essential. ---GK---
