    Jade

Hi. So, I know you know I want to become an author, right? Right. The thing is... I don't know where to start. So I have a couple of questions.

Do I need a website? With my name on it and stuff? Should I write short stories and publish them online?

What should I do to build an audience?

    Hi, Jade,

Do you need a website? I didn't get one until I had some books out and was in the process of making a name for myself. I think a website can wait. Should you write and publish online? I wouldn't. You don't get paid for that. And people are funny about getting stuff for free. They seriously undervalue it.

My advice is to do it the traditional way: write stuff and send it out to publishers that you know of, or find in books on Writers' Markets.

Having said that, my fear is that I'm so far over the hill that I don't even begin to understand how things work in the 21st century. And I'm afraid of giving you poor advice. I'd never forgive myself if I steered you wrong, Jade.

The answer might be to find a literary agent and ask them how it's done and what they advise. I'm really sorry that I can't fill that role for you, but I'm deathly afraid of steering you in the wrong direction.
