Hellen CooperHello everyone,
My name is Hellen Cooper, and I am excited to share that I’ve just completed writing my first book! It's been a long journey filled with late nights, countless cups of coffee, and a lot of learning. Now that the manuscript is finished, I’m looking into the next steps and could really use some advice from those who have experience in this area.
I’m considering self-publishing but want to ensure my book is as professional and polished as possible. I’ve heard a lot about book publishing services and how they can assist with various aspects of the process. Here are a few specific areas where I’m seeking guidance:
-
Editing and Proofreading: I know my manuscript needs a thorough edit to catch any errors and improve overall readability. Can anyone recommend reliable book publishing services that specialize in editing and proofreading? What should I look for when choosing an editor?
-
Design and Formatting: The cover design and interior layout are crucial for making a good first impression. Are there book publishing services that you’ve used and would recommend for creating professional designs? How involved were you in the design process?
-
Marketing and Distribution: Getting the book out there and into readers' hands seems like a daunting task. I’ve read about book publishing services that offer marketing and distribution support. How effective are these services, and what kind of strategies should I expect them to implement?
-
Overall Experience: For those who have used book publishing services, how was your overall experience? Were there any unexpected challenges or pleasant surprises? What would you do differently if you had to start over?
I’m eager to hear about your experiences and any tips you might have. Self-publishing is a new territory for me, and I want to make sure I’m making informed decisions. Thank you in advance for your help!
Best, Hellen Cooper

Congratulations on completing your first book! I know the feeling, and it's a wondrous one!
I did not self publish, and therefore I know less than nothing about it. Sorry to be so bankrupt of ideas. If I were in your shoes, I would probably first try to find an editorial service and interview a possible editor -- you'd want someone who was familiar with the genre in which you write. Once your manuscript is properly edited and copyedited, that editor might be able to put you onto a) a self-publishing company, or b) a publisher who might possibly purchase your work if he/she thinks it has promise.
I'll tell you what I tell the writers who ask me how to go about finding a publisher: go to the library and find a book on writers' markets. That book will list all English language publishers, contact persons, and the kind of manuscript they're looking to purchase. Then pack your ms. up with a covering letter (short) telling a bit about your self and your book. If you want the ms. back (and chances are they will reject it, although I was lucky!) enclose a stamped, self-addressed envelope for its return.
That's it. Good luck! -----Gordon Korman-----
