Jenn SargentHi all, I am a PTO mom at a middle school in a city in Northern, Indiana. I’m rolling around an idea that would be pretty amazing, if I can swing it. Since we became part of the school family, in August, I’ve been considering the best way for me to push to implement a “PAG“ like club at our school. Without doubt there will be interest in engagement.
In all of the awesome validating ways cool things come together, about a month after I was daydreaming about a community support group for our students, “Slacker” landed on top of our pre-bedtime queue. I’m dying to make this happen and it won’t be the best it can be unless it’s tied to that book…in the way that great and thoughtful literature is so impactful to all readers, let alone young readers.
My goal is to work with our librarian, who is a fantastic all-around person, to create this opportunity for the kids. Being halfway through the school year already, our target would be two community organizations this school year to build a momentum, find an appropriate rhythm then fill the calendar next year. I think it would be an awesome, welcome gift/prerequisite if each student joining our club receives a copy of “slacker”, with the expectation that they read it prior to their first Community activity as a club and school representative.
That was the longest way ever, it’s what I do, to ask if anybody has insights as to where I might look for bulk copies of the book, from a supplier who is heart centered and willing to work with an extremely low budget urban public school. As I’m still on the research end of planning, I have not approached my fellow Pto members yet, but I’m certain they will be enthusiastic and ready to support this. However, dress down days and spirit where sales leave us also with a cute but small budget.
I have an additional parent who is a local social worker and is already working on identifying our target community organizations. The next step is to secure 50 to 100 new copies of this awesome inspirational story to enable us to be prepared to gift one to each of our participants. Our school has over 450 students in three grades. Next year we are adding elementary school so our footprint and opportunity to impact our community for the good is about to skyrocket.
Thanks for your time in reading this and the assist. Any and all suggested are hugely appreciated.
Happy week!

Thanks for posting and for your strong support for SLACKER. I'm really pleased that you have such great plans for my book. I think your project is the kind of idea that should make an impression as well as go over well with your sudents.
I have nothing to do with selling books, so I refer you to the publisher, Scholastic NY. There are 2 possibilities for acquiring multiple copies at a reasonable price: Scholastic Reading Clubs, at 1-800-268-3860.
There is also Scholastic Book Fair's Warehouse Sale (check for email address) where a lot of savings may be available.
I hope the project comes to pass! Good luck! -----Gordon Korman-----
