So, in the professional side of writing, do publishers nitpick if a draft is hinting at it just being a story? For example,

"Now, one whom may be reading this book would be intrigued at (insert name here)'s actions..blah blah blah"

    Sincerely,

    J.R.

Thanks! I guess they would do that, since it kinda ruins the rhythm. Thanks again.

I see a lot more of it in older works of fiction. I see a lot of that narrator speak in the beginnings of books, and in books narrated by characters. You've probably read it, but I see a bit of it in the end of the Hobbit and in The Lord of the Rings.

    Hi, Jade,

You're right! It's old-fashioned, the "you see, Dear Reader," stuff. My editors hate it.

You also said it to the person (me) who hates anything by Tolkien and all high fantasy. I realize it's sacrilege, but I had enough of it in school to leave a rancid taste in my mouth, so there you are.

I really don't recommend it. Tolkien got away with it, but he got away with those dreadful hobbits, too.                          --G--

    Yet ANOTHER question.

I'm in a dilemma. I'm writing a manuscript...and each character, each "Turn" will get 10k words-the turns are supposed to be a bit lengthy and have a natural buildup until I make something happen and leave the reader stunned as the next character comes along.

I'm almost to the part where the finale happens and my word count is 1.5k...I don't know if this is because I write stories, but if I write at this rate, the word count will be 40k or under instead of my goal of 65k +. I have everything worked out-took me a week-and when I tried adding events it disrupted the flow and felt abnormal.

Thanks, and sorry if that was long.

    Hi, J.R.,

Hope the tea calmed things down a little.

If you are 25k under, your timing is off, which you knew. It's been my experience that there is no way to punch that up without adding new material. Can you add a character or characters? Or can you add an event that doesn't disrupt the flow quite so badly? I know it sounds like your planning is inviolable due to certain planned stunning effects. Planning is everything, but it sometimes backs you into a corner.

Wish I could be of some help. If it counts, I make an excellent cup of Earl Grey.                                                  --G--

I think I could. I have a few characters who are in my personal drawer. Again, would have to fit them in. Maybe a friend who adds tension? I have one named "Peon" I've been absolutely frantic to use. Maybe I could fit it in. If I have to do a complete rework, so be it. As long as there is 12am nights, I can do anything!

    Thanks, GK. I appreciate it!
