Chase Ambrose

Hi Gordon Korman!

So, I kin (which means to heavily identify and relate to a fictional character) Chase Ambrose from Restart. I also have (?) NPD - narcisssitic personality disorder - or at least I exhibit traits of it. I’m Chase’s age, haha. Anyways, I relate to him heavily for his redemption arc and the fact he used to be a horrible person, but changed. I relate to many aspects of him. I use this to cope - my therapists (I have four of them lol) have encouraged me to use it as an outlet to express myself when in emotional discomfort or just to make me happy. But anyways, because of this, I also headcanon Chase with NPD. I remember once you confirmed that he doesn’t, which is fine, but headcanons aren’t meant to be canon anyway. But I’ve also been getting slack from some people in the community because of it, saying you wouldn’t like it. So I wanted to ask the big man himself. Are you alright with me headcanoning him with it?

As a Joel kin can confirm I also do this, headcanoning things/projecting onto characters is pretty helpful when I’m distressed. Hope gk gives you the okay so people leave you alone x.x

Honestly many readers of books today lack literacy and understanding of portrayals and readings of fiction different from their own, perhaps if they tried chess they’d enjoy it more than online discourse. Just a thought.

Hi, all. First of all, I had to google "headcanon," so thanks for the vocabulary lesson.

I would never restrict readers from developing their own interpretations of my characters and stories. I love that. The more the merrier. That said, I don't personally see Chase as exhibiting NPD. Classic NPD usually means self-referential, which Chase is not. He's capable of empathy - in fact, as he discovers his prior behavior, he's even capable of shame.

As for the "old" Chase, it's left to the reader to decide whether he exhibited NPD prior to the accident. In fact, that would be an even larger "restart" - to overcome something like NPD because of amnesia. A lot to think about!

Glad you're all out there, taking my story to lengths even I hadn't considered.
